2018-2019 Semester Term:

SMAD 201 Foundations of User Experience Design: Study of the aesthetic principles and practices of web and interactive narrative design. Emphasis on visual communication in an interactive media context. 

SMAD 202 Foundations of Visual Communication Design: Study of computer operating systems and the principles and practices of graphic production for digital production media.

SMAD203 Foundations of Audio-Visual Storytelling: This course designed to give students a foundation in creating and producing engaging stories/content utilizing a varied range of audio-visual communication & media tools and formats for distribution on multiple delivery platforms including, but not limited to:

Television, interactive, film, documentaries, news, commercials, radio,  and podcasts. 

2019-2020 Semester Term:

SMAD 398 Irish Culture and Social Media Interaction DesignThis course explored various approaches to thematic visualization in digital media, applying techniques examined in Irish art and media. The student compares visual and written messaging techniques for target audiences in the US with those in the UK and Ireland and construct appropriate messages and visual designs for each audience. Create modern media creation and storytelling.- To execute social media strategies for advocacy and promotional purposes.

SMAD 370 User Interaction DesignThis course is about understanding web and mobile interaction design principles, and finding better ways of designing these interactions to improve the overall effectiveness and user experience. ideal for students who are looking for a deeper understanding of designing and prototyping interactive systems.

SMAD 317 Interactive Design I: Study of the principles of creating effective communication for the World Wide Web. Emphasis on the techniques used to design and integrate diverse media elements. Focus on the creation and manipulation of text, graphics, audio, and video for the web. Consideration of interface design and web delivery issues. 

 

LTLE 370 Instructional Technology: An online, asynchronous, mobile-first, research-based course offered at James Madison University.   In keeping with evolving student needs, this course provides the student with a richer experience and more flexibility in completing class assignments. It is built from the ground up to allow delivery on mobile devices, computers, and educational technology. Allowing students to create digital media pieces for the public, while learning and using different software along the way.

 

2020-2021 Semester Terms:

SMAD 480 Converged Media Production& Lab: A senior production studio course focusing on creative solutions for complex communication problems in print, video, and web media. The client-based projects will require creative brainstorming, teamwork, project management, and analysis and criticism in addition to production and distribution

 

SMAD 330 New Media Law: An in-depth investigation course of the business and legal aspects of new media production, publication, and distribution. Examination of legal issues affecting the new media industry including intellectual property laws, torts, contracts, and licensing. Discussion of current policies and practices affecting new media development and review of pertinent

legal reference materials. 

MKT 380 Principles of Marketing: This course focused on how products and services are conceived, priced, developed, and promoted. In the course, students will analyze marketing and its environment, market segmentation and consumer behavior, product strategy (in particular branding, packaging, and design), marketing communication strategy, and the ways that the Internet and Social Media can be used as marketing tools.

SMAD 470 New Media and Society: This course examines how new media shape the way we understand our social environment. We will examine the role of media convergence, with an emphasis on the intersection of information and communication technologies, content and information, and the people who use the information and interact with the new technologies.
